The telling title of Amalie Vestergaard Olsen’s artwork is a sentence that has followed her for a long time in the artistic process of examining women’s position in working life and how it has changed over the years. Drawing is her main expression and in this installation the drawings have been cut out of cardboard and hung on a kind of stand. The motifs hanging on the stand tell a story about women’s working life, in which Vestergaard Olsen traces the feminist struggle for the right to work, and with it economic independence, all the way back to the medieval witch persecution and how social systems and structures tend to stand in the way of women’s autonomy. She got inspiration for the project from her own mother who for a time became too sick to be able to work and with that risked losing both income and social recognition. With this installation, Amalie Vestergaard Olsen opens up to talk about how our systems and political reality affect some individuals more than others.
